CHARACTER
DESCRIPTIONS

Mr. Woodhouse

Male Character

The elderly squire who leads the local social scene by virtue of being the biggest landowner. He is a finicky worrier who is always looking for objections to anything that is proposed.

Mr. Knightly

Male Character

A friend of the Woodhouse family who has known Emma since she was a child and tries, unsuccessfully, to curb some of her more extreme plans. He is also a major landowner in the village.

Mr. Weston

Male Character

A wealthy retired businessman, a near neighbour of the Woodhouses.

Harriet Smith

Female Character

A young girl of no family currently teaching at the village school. She is very naïve, but, given her low social position, is very flattered when Emma takes an interest in her.

Mr. Martin

Male Character

A young farmer, a tenant of Mr. Knightly, who is very attracted to Harriet.

Frank Churchill

Male Character

The son of Mr. Weston by his earlier marriage. He is currently living with his very aristocratic elderly aunt in London and has not been seen in the village for a long time. When he appears, he seems to be playing some kind of game. The role may involve some singing.

Mrs. Cole

Female Character

Another wealthy neighbor of the Woodhouses. This is only a small role, but she plays an important part in the plot

Emma Woodhouse

Female Character

The young unmarried daughter of Mr. Woodhouse. Emma is kind and thoughtful, but delights in using her social position to interfere in other people’s lives, though with the best of intentions, but usually with less than helpful outcomes. As a matchmaker, she is very concerned to see that her friends marry those who she thinks the most suitable. She hasn’t given any thought as to her own potential marriage partner. The role may involve some singing.

Mr. Elton

Male Character

The new vicar of the parish. He is a youngish bachelor, a pushy, somewhat slimy individual who has designs on Emma.

Mrs. Weston

Female Character

The new bride of Mr. Weston. She was previously the governess and companion of Emma and is Emma’s closest friend.

Miss Bates

Female Character

The middle-aged spinster daughter of the late vicar. Having fallen on hard times since her father’s death, she now lives with her elderly mother in a cottage in the village. A kindly soul, but very talkative.

Jane Fairfax

Female Character

A rather mysterious young lady, currently living with Miss Bates. She seems to be unhappy, but no one can work out why. Her situation resolves itself during the play. The role may involve some singing.

Mrs. Elton

Female Character

The new wife of Mr. Elton who he married on the rebound after being rejected by Emma. The new Mrs. Elton is a newcomer to the village and considers herself at least the equal of Emma.
