An unhappy game of romantic follow-the-leader explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow, home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell, arguably Christie’s finest comic grande dame. Dr. Cristow, the Harley Street lothario, is at the center of the trouble when, assembled in one place, we find his dull but devoted wife, Gerda, his mistress and prominent sculptor, Henrietta, and his former lover and Hollywood film star, Veronica. Also visiting are Edward and Midge, whose romantic assertions are likewise thrown into the mix. As the list of romantic associations grows so does the list of potential suspects. Nearly everyone has a motive, but only one of them did the deed.

CHARACTER
DESCRIPTIONS

Dr. John Cristow

Male 35-45 years old

A brilliant, successful, and highly charismatic Harley Street physician. He is an arrogant womanizer who finds himself hopelessly entangled in a messy web of romance and past affairs.

Henrietta Angkatell

Female 30-40 years old

A prominent, independent, and free-spirited sculptor. She is John Cristow's current mistress—a strong-willed artist who deeply loves him but refuses to let it consume her life.

Male 55-70 years old

Lucy's husband and the master of "The Hollow" country estate. He is a distinguished, sober-minded, and stable retired colonial administrator who acts as a grounding foil to his erratic wife.

Midge Harvey

Female 20-30 years old

A younger, less well-off Angkatell relative who works for a living in a London dress shop. Regarded as the "poor relation" of the family, she is fiercely independent but privately, hopelessly in love with Edward.

Gudgeon

Male 45-65 years old

The consummate, impeccably professional butler at the estate. He is fiercely loyal to Lady Angkatell and is willing to quietly clean up any domestic messes to protect the family.

Inspector Colquhoun

Male 40-60 years old

The decent, highly intelligent, and slightly world-weary police detective assigned to solve the murder.

Gerda Cristow

Female 30-45 years old

John’s seemingly dull, submissive, and intensely devoted wife. She is outwardly self-doubting, timid, and fretful, constantly living in her husband's large shadow.

Lady Lucy Angkatell

Female 55-70 years old

The eccentric, absent-minded, and charmingly dotty mistress of the estate. She is a supreme comic grande dame who effortlessly controls her household with erratic yet brilliant whims.

Edward Angkatell

Male 35-45 years old

A distant, somewhat boring, but deeply predictable cousin who has recently inherited the grand family estate of Ainswick. He has spent years carrying a quiet, unrequited torch for Henrietta.

Veronica Craye

Female 30-40 years old

A breathtakingly glamorous, intensely self-absorbed Hollywood film star. She is John Cristow's ex-fiancée who abruptly sweeps back into his life demanding his undivided attention.

Doris

Female 18-25 years old

A young, nervous, and slightly clumsy housemaid at the estate who inadvertently gets caught up in the household drama.

Detective Sergeant Penny

Male 25-35 years old

Colquhoun's clever, sharp, and dutiful assistant on the investigation.
